Lake Balkhash (Kazakhstan)

TypePoster

Duration: September 1975 - August 2001

Is Lake Balkhash going to dry out? If the countries which border it continue to set very low prices for the lake water and that of its feeder rivers, which encourages intensive use, it is possible. While the local economy (agriculture and mining) are benefitting from this financial largesse today, the future looks less rosy. Scarcity threatens. The small lakes to the southeast are already nearly dry.
