Forest of Kisangani (D.R. of the Congo)

TypePoster

Duration: January 1975 - March 2001

Kisangi is a city of about half a million people, situated on the Congo River. This large
human population is not without impact on the surrounding tropical forest. Already
in 1975, extensive zones of deforestation (in light green) can be seen clearly. By 2001,
the situation is even more alarming and can be explained by the arrival of large numbers
of refugees who were forced to flee from their homes by political instability in the region.
