This cluster deals with the human dimensions of environment in an interdisplinary approach. In reference to the integrative DPSIR model , the first objective of this cluster is to identify the socio-economic factors (e.g. demography, economy) and impacts (e.g. on human lives, livelihoods) of environmental changes, as well as the societal responses (e.g. governance) to these environmental challenges.

Current projects:

  • Tracking Environmental Impacts of Consumption (TREIC)
  • Governance of Bolivian forests: a research grant by the Swiss Network for International Studies (SNIS)
  • Global Assessment Report (GAR): global and national risk indicators for the Global Assessment Report 2011 (ISDR)
  • FP7 enviroGRIDS (WP3. Demographic scenarios): Black Sea Catchment Observation and Assessment System.

The social construction, dissemination and use of environmental information are the second focus of the unit. The activities conducted in this field include building information and indicators systems for use in the policy domain, as well as building geo-information capacities for environmental assessments (e.g. by means of e-learning).
