UNEP is the United Nations system’s designated entity to address environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

To focus its efforts over the period 2010-2013, UNEP developed a Medium-term Strategy which enables it to work more efficiently and effectively to achieve its goals. The new approach strengthens the capacity of UNEP to deliver on its mission by focusing on the following six thematic priorities: climate change; resource efficiency; disasters and conflicts; environmental governance; harmful substances and hazardous wastes; and ecosystem management.

The six priority areas define UNEP’s focus on the environmental challenges of the 21st century.
