There is an urgent need to address the enviornmental impacts both at the urban and at the rural level.

It is proposed to the Secretary General that the United Nations takes the lead in developing an action plan for the use and protection of existing natural resources, including the sustainable use of forests and land. It is also proposed that an urban programme be developed to support the urban centres in southern Guinea in building capacities in the environmental management in their towns and villages.

It is important to strengthen the coordination between the organisations and programmes involved in managing the environmental impacts of the refugees. This could be done during a workshop in Conakry which should bring together all stakeholders, not only to discuss coordination matters, but also the outcomes of the pre-assessment, and the urban project and natural resources management programme.

Proposals should be presented during a Guinea donors conference to be organised later this year.
