The Enrichment Map of Endangered Plant Species in Africa is a derived data set, created by reclassification of the overlay of ten individual endangered plant species in Africa. The polygons are the same as the ones found in the overlay, but in the enrichment map the values of the polygons are the number of species found in each one, instead of some unique combination of them, from the list of ten possible species. The legend gives the number of species per polygon (0 to 5), and also the Latin names of the ten endangered plant species.

The ten original maps of Endangered Plant Species distributions in Africa were provided by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) - World Conservation Monitoring Center (WCMC) to UNEP/GRID-Geneva for digitization into computer form in 1986. They have not been updated since that time.

The source of the original ten data files is the Protected Areas Data Unit (PADU) of the WCMC in Cambridge, U.K. as digitized by GRID-Geneva. There is no reference available for the original maps, although one may refer to the 1986 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, prepared by the IUCN Conservation Monitoring Center in a volume of 105 pages.

The Enrichment Map of Endangered Plant Species in Africa data set has a spatial resolution of two minutes (120 seconds) of latitude / longitude, or approximately 3.7 kilometers. The data file consists of 2191 rows (lines, records) by 2161 columns (elements, pixels, samples). Its upper-left or northwest corner origin is 38 degrees, 0 minutes and 45 seconds North latitude (38d 00' 45" N), and -20 degrees, 1 minute and 15 seconds West longitude (-20d 01' 15" W); it extends to -35 degrees, 1 minute and 15 seconds South latitude (-35d 01' 15" S), and 52 degrees, 0 minutes and 45 seconds East longitude (52d 00' 45" E) at its terminal point in the lower-right or southeast corner. The data file comprises 4.74 Megabytes.

UNEP/GRID Documentation Summary for Data Set: Overlay of Ten Endangered Plant Species in Africa

The Overlay of Ten Endangered Plant Species in Africa data set is the result of an overlay operation which combines the individual distributions of ten separate plant species into a single map. The polygons in the overlay map are arbitrarily numbered and represent a combination of the plant species found in each particular polygon. A list of all polygon numbers and their corresponding plant species is found in a separate document, which also shows their Latin names.
