Colpocyclops dulcis (Monchenko, 1977)

Colpocyclops dulcis imageSynonyms: None.

Common names: None.

Order (Scientific): CYCLOPOIDA.

Family (Scientific): CYCLOPIDAE.

Taxonomic descriptions: As a type species of the genus displays the most modified and oligomerizated structures known in Cyclopidae in the mouth parts: the denths on the masticatory part of the mandibula, the maxillula palp and very strong modified maxilla of a prahensile type, maxilliped absent on the whole. Total female length 744-850 mkm, male 498-517 mkm.

Colpocyclops dulcis arealIUCN Status:
    World level:
    Black Sea Regional level:
    Subregion level: VU (Ukrainian sector)

Distribution: Irrigation systems (channels and water reservoirs) connected with the lower part of the Dnieper, which is considered its initial area. As result of damming of the Dnieper it was introduced to the following water reservoirs: Kakhovka, Zaporozhye, Dnieprodzerzhinsk and Kremenchug. Its genus is allied to the typical Ponto-Caspian genus Smirnoviella. This genus relation, the actual area and haloparthy provide a reason to consider it as a member of the Ponto-Caspia zoogeographic complex.

Habitats type, Critical habitats, Limiting factors: A meiobentic bottom-living species inhabiting the sands and mud sands at different depths of the oligohaline to fresh-water water-bodies. Found at a salinity of 0.56-1.51ppt.

Biology: A polycyclic development during the warm season of the year. The prehensile type of the mouth parts structure suggests commensal mode of life of some invertebrates.

Population trends: The habitat and distribution pattern provide a rare example of the industrial activity of man (the damming of the Dnieper) to the favorable for preservation of a rare or endangered species.

Threats: Pollution of the irrigation systems and their eutrophication causing hypoxia in the bottom layer of water.

Conservation measures taken: None.

Conservation measures proposed: Enter in the Black Sea Red Data Book. A reduction of water reservoir pollution.
